What you'll find in the app

  • Places: Mitre Square, Christ Church Spitalfields, the Ten Bells.
  • Events: the Goulston Street graffito, the murder of Annie Chapman at 29 Hanbury Street.
  • People: the women who died, among them Mary Jane Kelly, and the investigators, such as Inspector Abberline.

How Stories work

  • Each story is about one thing: a place, an event or a person.
  • Each story comes from one source page and is checked fact by fact against that source before it goes live.
  • A pin means "this happened here". If the exact spot is uncertain, the app says "around here". If the source names no place, the story has no pin.
  • The source is shown with every story, and anyone can ask for a correction.

Practical

  • Free on Android. Stories are free; the AR compass and advanced search are part of the paid features.
  • Works anywhere in the area: open the map or compass and the nearby stories appear.
  • Whitechapel and Spitalfields are a short walk from the City of London.
