Who we are
History Lives Here is a mobile app that brings local history to life around you, operated by FCodingS, Tilburg, historyliveshere.nl. Contact: support@historyliveshere.nl.
No account required
History Lives Here does not require you to create an account or log in. You can use the app immediately as a guest. We do not collect your name, email address, or any other sign-up information.
Location data
The app uses your device's precise and approximate location to show nearby historical content on the map and to position AR content around you. This location data is used in three ways: it is sent to our backend servers to retrieve historical content relevant to your surroundings; it is sent to Mapbox, our mapping provider, to render the map itself; and when you use the AR Compass feature it is sent, together with camera imagery, to Google's ARCore Geospatial service so Google can determine your precise position and orientation outdoors. If you save a "planning to visit" place in the app, its coordinates are sent to our backend to prepare historical content for that area in advance. This list is stored only on your device and is not tied to any account.
Camera data
The AR Compass feature uses your device's camera to overlay historical content on your surroundings in real time, and uses ARCore's Geospatial service (operated by Google) to determine your position from camera imagery and location together. Camera imagery is processed for this positioning purpose and is not stored or used by us for any other purpose.
Membership purchases
The app offers an optional Pro membership, available as a subscription with possible free trials and promotional offers. Purchases are made and managed entirely through Google Play Billing and are linked to your Google Play account, not to any in-app account. We do not collect, see, or store any payment card or billing information; this is handled directly between you and Google. To unlock Pro features, the app only receives confirmation of your purchase status from Google Play. Google's own privacy policy applies to these transactions.
Who processes your data
We use Mapbox (mapping) and Google (ARCore Geospatial, Google Play Billing) as data processors to provide app functionality. Your data is not sold, and is not shared with any third party beyond what is needed to provide the app's core features as described above.
How long we keep your data
Location requests from the app are processed transiently to return nearby content and are not stored on our servers. When you save a "planning to visit" place, only its coordinates and a search radius are queued on our backend to prepare content for that area; these records contain no account, device, or other identifier and cannot be linked to you. Our hosting infrastructure may briefly retain technical request logs (such as IP addresses) for security and reliability purposes; we do not use these to identify anyone.
Your rights
Under GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold about you at any time. Since the app does not require an account, most data related to your use of the app lives only on your own device and can be removed at any time by clearing the app's data or uninstalling it. To request deletion of any data held on our servers, email us at support@historyliveshere.nl and we will respond within 30 days.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will publish the updated version on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
